Dear Mother or “Mami”

by Montserrat Rojas

This is coming from the bottom of my heart.

Dear Mother or “Mami,” I know you will always be here and there for me. Sometimes your words, “speeches” push me and motivate me, even without you trying to.

I wouldn’t ask for any other person to take your place, in which you weren’t prepared to be 18 years ago. Just know you have done an excellent job, you still are. Everyone tells you, when they see me or know me.

I want to thank you, right now (all the time), I feel like you deserve more than words:

You use all the love you have for me,

And you put it in a strict, caring,

Strong words. They push me though.

They really do. So far I’m not in the streets,

I’m not a drug addict, I’m not pregnant,

I’m not a criminal.

I’m about to finish and graduate from

High school. Soon you’ll have diplomas,

Diplomas dedicated to you, and all your

Years of sweat, tears, sleepless nights, perhaps

Will be payed {paid} off, you’ll see your

Detective daughter, or your Dr. So

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Thank you for pushing me with

Your lovely words, your cruel words, your

Strict words. Thank you for not ever

Giving up on me.

You had made me a better person,

A better daughter, a better woman.

If anyone deserves me to give

Thanks. You’ll always be the first.

Thank you for being who you

 “Gracias Mami.”
